I find myself frequently playing with concepts related to my selfhood. How do I want to present to the world, and what does this world expect from me? How much should I let these perceptions impact my behavior?
The girls stuck in this rice box reinterpret Asian female archetypes and common themes of identity and societal expectations they hold. Each figure embodies a facet of these themes—assimilation, fetishization, docility, and resistance—to confront biases ingrained in folklore and societal norms.
At some point in my life I have been each one of these girls. I would assimilate to inherited narratives of who I should be, I would be docile and compliant, I would accept fetishization, and I would be angry at this endless cycle.
Yet, the notion of this perfection only exists in fables; I retreat from these themes, molding these girls to compose their own narrative.
